Michigan Sportsmen Against Hungerby one_shot This time of year, thousands of hunters take to the woods, enjoying family, friends, and all that nature has to offer. The game that is harvested is cherished by all. Occasionally, hunters may find themselves with an abundance.
The Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger (MSAH, http://www.sportsmenagainsthunger.org) is a non-profit organization that works to link sportsmen, wild game processors, and charities that help feed the less fortunate. "MSAH is an all volunteer organization with no paid staff persons and is operated entirely by sportsmen and women concern about making a positive difference in the community. Together, they have assembled a network of processors and charities to help channel wild game donations into the hands of those in need."
A sportsman wishing to make a donation can take his deer to a participating processor, who will process and package the meat. Donations are then collected and distributed to charitable organizations, primarily by the Food Bank Council of Michigan (http://www.fbcmich.org), which is a statewide agency that services all 83 counties through member agencies such as Red Cross, Salvation Army, church pantries, etc. MSAH pays the processor $0.80/lb. Some processors accept this as payment in full, others may charge the sportsmen a nominal fee. It's best to contact the processor ahead of time to determine the details. One can find a list of processors here:
Don't see your regular processor on the list? Contact them and ask them if they'd be interested in participating.
MSAH also accepts cash donations that are fully tax deductible. 100% of your donation goes towards the processing of meat to be distributed to charities. Anyone wishing to make a contribution can find their contact information here:
"Michigan Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus: Wild Game Cookbook" is a collection of over 130 recipes submitted by elected officials, their staff, and other state employees. It includes recipes for all types of wild game. 100% of proceeds go to MSAH. It can be purchased for $15, which includes shipping:
Michigan has one of the largest whitetail herds in the nation. Hunters provide a valuable service to the state each year - reducing these numbers to levels that our habitat and infrastructure can support. With the help of MSAH, all of us can provide an equally important service - feeding the hungry. As a hunter and a sportsman, I'd encourage everyone to consider such a worthy cause.
